Introduction

Dermaplaning involves using a type of blade or scalpel to exfoliate your skin.  It also removes any dirt, as well as the hair on your face; the medical term is “velus hair” but it is better known as “peach fuzz”. The dermaplaning blade is gently and carefully scraped across the face of the skin.

Why would you dermaplane the skin on your face?

Here is a summary of the many possible benefits:

  • It will leave your skin brighter and smoother because it is removing the top layer of dead skin.
  • To answer the question in the title, it will most likely result in your makeup looking better because your primer, foundation and powder will sit much better on a hair-free surface.
  • It will allow your skincare products to penetrate your skin more deeply.
  • With long-term use, it may result in a reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, have beneficial effects on hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone, and can result in scar reduction – but as we will see below the evidence on this is a little sketchy!
  • Although the idea of sliding a blade across your face is kind of scary, the treatment doesn’t actually hurt at all.
  • The recovery time is very fast; if you do it at bedtime, the redness will most likely have faded by the following morning.

What do you need to be careful of when dermaplaning?

Everyone is different and how you respond to dermaplaning will depend on your ethnicity, skin type and medical history.

Some of the downsides of dermaplaning are:

  • You may have some short-term side effects, including your skin being red, irritated or sore.
  • You should avoid this treatment if you have skin conditions such as acne, rosacea or eczema as it could irritate the skin.
  • It could cause breakouts or lead in in-grown hairs.

You need to be careful of the sun and wear a good sun cream after the treatment. But ladies, you should be wearing a sun block at all times anyway!

How do I start dermaplaning?

According to the article “Everything you need to know about dermaplaning” by Medical News Today, this treatment should only be carried out by a licenced professional.  However, this is a treatment that needs to be repeated regularly and attending a salon or clinic would be expensive in the long run.

As you can see on TikTok and YouTube, many women are choosing to do it themselves. You do need to be very careful as this involves using a blade – and, let’s be frank, no woman wants shaving cuts on her face!! You also need to make sure that you only do it when your skin is healthy and in good condition.

Steps to doing the treatment yourself are:

  • Use specially designed dermaplaning blades.
  • Make sure the blade you are using is clean and sharp.
  • Take your time, never do this in a hurry as you are more likely to cut yourself.
  • Wash your face thoroughly.
  • Gently move the blade in a downwards direction at a 45 degree angle.
  • Apply an unscented, plain moisturiser or a hyaluronic acid  afterwards
  • Avoid wearing makeup for a few hours after dermaplaning (it is a good idea to do it just before bed time to give your skin time to recover).

The other question is how often to do it. We would suggest starting off with every 3 to 4 weeks and if your skin reacts well and you feel that you are benefiting, you could do it as often as every 1 to 2 weeks.

The million dollar question, will my facial hair grow back thicker??

No, dermaplaning does not cause facial hair to grow back thicker. This is a common misconception, but the truth is that dermaplaning only removes the vellus hairs, which are the fine, soft, and often colorless hairs that cover the face. These hairs are not the same as terminal hairs, which are thicker and coarser.

When vellus hairs are shaved off through dermaplaning, they will grow back at the same rate and thickness as they were before. The hair follicle’s structure and growth pattern are not altered by dermaplaning, so there is no physiological reason for the hair to grow back thicker.

The scientific evidence for dermaplaning

Unfortunately, there is no actual evidence for long-term benefits of dermaplaning in terms of facial rejuvenation. In the study, “Dermaplaning, topical oxygen, and photodynamic therapy: a systematic review of the literature”, they assessed the clinical efficacy of some non-invasive techniques. They found the scientific data to be “scarce, anecdotal, and not well documentedand concluded that patient expectations should be managed and that any of these methods should be combined with a good skin care routine, daily use of sunscreen, taking vitamins and supplements, and an overall healthy diet.

Conclusion

Are the Seeoran team fans of dermaplaning? Hell, yes we are! We don’t care if there is no evidence for long-term benefits. It makes us look better right now and it definitely makes our makeup look a lot smoother, which is a big concern of ours. A freshly exfoliated face with peach buzz removed is a really great first step in preparing for a big night out or just a great way to start off your week!

What do you think? Have you ever tried it? Does the idea of ‘shaving your face’ bother you? Would you be afraid of stubble?
