Introduction
There are lots of devices on the market today that stimulate your skin and underlying muscle by applying some kind of pressure or movement. And then there is the old fashioned method of massaging your face, neck, chest, legs and other areas with your own hands. Dry brushing your skin or using exfoliating gloves also creates stimulation, although these would be too harsh for the facial area.
Is there evidence to support the idea that massage and stimulation of skin keeps it healthy and young? And, if so, what treatments could you do on a regular basis that would actually have a positive impact on your appearance?
We’ll also look at Gua Sha and Jade Rollers. For these devices, the claims go beyond healthier skin and make promises such as tighter jawlines and a more sculpted appearance.
So let’s look at the science and the user experience related to all of the above!
What does the science say about facial massage?
In the 2017 study, “Effects of a skin-massaging device”, they looked at twice daily massages for one minute at different frequencies, and they determined that the mechanical stimulus evoked an anti-aging response. Interestingly, they also found that combining the massaging device with an anti-aging face cream amplified the beneficial effects of the cream.
In another study done in 2002, “Rejuvenating facial massage – a bane or boon?”, they reported subjective benefits mentioned by over 50% of participants, including a feeling of freshness and rejuvenation, keeping the skin supple and tightening of the skin.
In a 2007 study, “The effect of Gua Sha treatment on the microcirculation of surface tissue”, they found that use of Gua Sha increases microcirculation local to a treated area.
So we can conclude that there is scientific evidence to support the use of regular massage to contribute to healthier skin. Now the question is, out of the myriad of possible ways that you could use to massage and stimulate your skin, what are the options and which of them might work well in your life?
What facial massage devices are available?
Ultrasonic Beauty Device
We really like this device because it is relatively inexpensive, it has different coloured LED lights and uses electric muscle stimulation. You need to use it with a conductive gel or an oil. It gets very good feedback on Amazon with users saying things like they can see improvements in sun damage, their skin looks brighter and smoother, and wrinkles have decreased.
Because of the electric muscle stimulation, it does cause muscle contraction and a slightly strange sensation. Also, it has to be charged and the charge doesn’t last very long – maybe for one to two hours of use – but this isn’t too much of an issue because you probably only need to use the device for 10 to 20 minutes in a treatment.
Across your face, try to use it on the maximum setting to get the full benefit, except for the eye area, for which you will need to reduce the strength. You can use this device on any area of your body – neck, chest, arms, hands, etc.

Gua Sha & Jade Rollers
These are so cheap that there is no excuse for not trying them. We can’t be sure that use of a Gua Sha will achieve all the results that are promised but we think its well worth a try. We have a video below to show you how to use one, done by Sandra Lanshin Chiu, an acupuncturist who sounds like she knows what she is talking about.
Gua Sha Routine
It would take a little while to learn the Gua Sha routine but you don’t have to do the full routine that Sandra goes through. You could decide to only focus on your jawline or your cheek bones. You could then keep the Gua Sha beside your sofa and do a few minutes each night when you sit down to watch the TV. We are big fans of building skin care treatments into your daily routine so that they just become habit.
The Gua Sha often comes with a Jade Roller. We probably prefer the Gua Sha to the Jade Roller but using the roller would also have benefits – as we saw in the science section above, any sort of skin stimulation and massage seems to create postive effects in your skin.

Conclusion
We love skin massage. We’ve reviewed various devices above but you can also just use your hands. We love to massage our face and neck with Bio-Oil. And we often use heavier oils, like Black Seed Oil, on our arms and legs. And we like nothing better than a good skin brushing in the shower.
