Introduction

Recently, Gwyneth Paltrow, a retired actor and the founder of Goop.com, a wellness brand, came under fire for appearing gaunt in an interview where she talked about her seemingly restrictive eating habits and use of an intravenous (IV) drip to get essential vitamins. In this article, we will delve deeper into the controversy and discuss the various points that arise from it.

Goop.com & controversy

Goop.com has faced controversy in the past for allegedly promoting pseudoscience, including the infamous vaginal steaming, which is thought not only to be unnecessary but also potentially harmful. They have also been sued for making false health claims about their products, including jade eggs for vaginas and a flower essence blend, said to prevent depression, which led to a settlement of $145,000 in 2018.

The dangers of very restricted eating patterns

Paltrow’s interview revealed that she consumes only coffee for breakfast, bone broth for lunch, and vegetables for dinner. Such a restrictive diet not only lacks essential nutrients but could also lead to malnutrition, anaemia, and other health problems. A further concern would be that these kind of diets could trigger eating disorders, which are life-threatening mental illnesses that require professional intervention.

Influencers often present themselves as authorities on wellness but the truth is that their claims are not always backed up by scientific evidence, which could lead to followers engaging in behaviours that are not beneficial to their health.

In an ideal world, influencers would be more transparent about the limitations of their advice and encourage their followers to consult with medical professionals before making major changes to their diet or lifestyle.

To be fair, Paltrow has clapped back and said that she actually eats far more than only these things each day, and that she has ‘cheat days’ where she can even eat french fries.

Gwyneth Paltrow Responds

Let’s hear what Gwyneth herself has to say about the controversy.

Is being extremely thin actually healthy?

There is a common misconception that being thin automatically means being healthy. However, this is far from the truth.  According to MedicalNewToday, being underweight, which is having a body mass index (BMI) of less than 18.5, can lead to osteoporosis, skin and teeth problems, lack of energy and getting sick frequently.

It is much better to focus on overall health rather than just body weight or size.

Paleo Diet

Paltrow follows the Paleo diet, which consists mainly of whole, unprocessed foods such as meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. The idea behind the diet is that our bodies are better adapted to the types of foods that were available to our ancestors, and that by avoiding modern processed foods and other foods that were not commonly consumed during the Paleolithic era, we can improve our health and prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

EverydayHealth.com tell us that “scientists have expressed concern that we do not yet have enough evidence to make any strong claims about the paleo diet’s health benefits, especially its long-term effects”.

Is using IV the best way to get essential vitamins and minerals?

Paltrow revealed in the interview that she uses an IV drip to get essential vitamins and minerals. While IVs are a common  procedure for people with medical conditions, using them unnecessarily can lead to health risks such as infection, blood clots, and vein damage. Moreover, getting essential vitamins and minerals from whole foods is more beneficial than relying on IVs.

Paltrow’s statement about being an “early IV adopter” could be said to reveal the elitism that often accompanies wellness trends. Wellness should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status. Our view is that using an IV for non-medical reasons is not only unnecessary but also exclusionary.

The 'Goop lifestyle'

In terms of the lifestyle promoted by Goop.com, we recommend focusing on a well-balanced diet, regular exercise, and evidence-based health practices. Gwyneth Paltrow’s recent interview has sparked a much-needed discussion about the dangers of restrictive eating patterns, fad diets, and the elitism that often accompanies wellness trends.

We don’t want to hop on the bandwagon of criticising Palthrow personally because we assume she is a well-intentioned person who really cares about her own health and helping promote healthy lifestyle choices – but the reality is that she is an influencer with a celebrity platform, and she runs a successful wellness brand, and so we think that she should carefully consider what she is discussing on public platforms.

Of course, she is going to say that, in this case, she was just talking about her own daily wellness programme and not trying to sell it to anyone else – but we think she needs to acknowledge that many people look up to her and may be inclined to accept what she is doing as best practice.

Conclusion

We all need to remember that influencers are not medical professionals and their advice should not be taken as gospel. It can be tempting to follow the latest wellness trend or diet fad, but we should all do own research and evaluation before making any changes to our lifestyle. It is good practice to seek out multiple sources of information before making a decision to change our daily habits. And, of course, you should consult with a medical professional before making any significant changes to your diet or exercise routine.

Ultimately, you have a responsibility to your own health to be an informed consumer and make choices that are right for you. Stand in your own power and don’t impulsively follow influencer advice – take the time to investigate and evaluate – and make your own decision!
