Introduction

Did you know that there are simple, affordable products that you can use at night when you sleep to smooth out your wrinkles and fine lines? They act in two ways, they apply gentle pressure to the skin to smooth out any lines and they also prevent line formation that may be caused by your sleeping position. Many of us sleep on our sides or our backs and this means our face is pressed into the pillow. We all know that this positioning can lead to wrinkles over time, particularly the vertical lines that appear under our eyes.

In this article we go through our favourite products and how they work, and we look at the science behind silicone being applied to the skin and the magical effects it can have.

So what is the science behind silicone patches and tape?

We know that silicone patches have been used by surgeons for years to prevent raised scars and keloids after surgery. They also help reduce itchiness and irritation as the scar heals. Silicone can help the skin stay hydrated as it mimics the skins moisture barrier and traps the moisture in your body. It also allows the skin to breathe.

The products that we are discussing in this article for wrinkle reduction use the same technology, facilitating hydration and the regulation of collagen production in your skin.

How to apply silicone patches

Clean, dry and apply your skincare products. Try not to use oily moisturisers as this will reduce the ability of the patches or tape to stick to your skin. Once your topical applications are fully absorbed, apply the patches or tape to the areas of your skin that you want to protect or smooth out.

The following morning, remove the patches. Depending on whether you plan to reuse them, you should either dispose of them or rinse, dry and put them away safely for reuse.

One slightly annoying aspect is that some of the adhesive may remain in certain parts of your face and, if you are not careful to remove it, it will interfere with your makeup application. We recommend using a facecloth to wash your face.

A product that we are incredibly fond of is the Smoothies Facial Patches. The Smoothies are clear stickers. They are technically reusable but one of our team members applies them every night as single use. To be honest, even if the adhesive remains strong enough for re-use, they are covered in sweat and dead skin cells from one nights’ use so we think one-time use is the most hygienic option.

These can be purchased in small triangles, which we love as they are incredibly versatile. They can also be purchased in shapes that are customed to your face, with one for the forehead, two for the sides of the eyes, two for the upper lip, etc.

They can also be used during the day if you are not going anywhere special. They are particularly useful if you are expressive with your forehead because these patches actually hold your skin so tight that you can’t frown, keeping your forehead smooth.

Another product that we believe is a real beauty secret is Silicone Scar Tape. This product is medical grade and used in the treatment of scars. However, we know a 50 year old woman who swears by this tape. She goes to bed every night with a strip under each eye. This prevents wrinkles forming while she is sleeping and smooths the thin eye skin area out overnight, as the tape places gentle pressure on the skin. It also keeps the area very moist.

Pros

  • We genuinely believe, that with consistent application, these products have a noticeable effect in terms of reducing lines.
  • They can be used instead of Botox. Of course, they don’t have the same long-term impact as Botox – but they also don’t have the possible complications and loss of facial expressiveness.
  • Silicone patches are considered safe, generally with no side effects.

Cons

  • They add to your beauty budget and are an additional monthly expense.
  • If you are going to use these products, you need to be consistent and apply them most nights. This can be inconvenient and it can be embarrassing if you are in a new relationship. We suspect that if you have been in a relationship for over two years, your partner might chuckle initially when you jump into bed covered in patches or tape, but we believe they get used to it quite quickly!

Conclusion

We are a big fan of silicone tape and patches. We love the fact that these can be used to smooth your skin in place of injectables like Botox. We also like that these products are already used by the medical community. We appreciate that the research conducted so far on their efficacy was focused on scar reduction but we don’t think it’s a far stretch to believe that they could have also have a positive impact on skin regeneration and rejuvenation.
