How Retinol Works

Retinol is like a superhero for your skin. It helps your skin make more collagen, which is like the building blocks that keep your skin firm and elastic. It also encourages your skin to get rid of old cells and make new ones, giving you a smoother and more radiant look. Here’s a simple breakdown:

  • Collagen Boost: Retinol helps your skin make more collagen, which makes it bouncy and less wrinkly.
  • Cell Renewal: It encourages your skin to replace old cells with fresh ones, giving you a healthier and brighter complexion.
  • Smaller Pores: Retinol can even make your pores look smaller, giving your skin a smoother texture.

In a study comparing the effects of Retinol and Retinoic Acid, they demonstrate that the use of Retinol improves skin at both the level of the dermis and the epidermis. In the study, they also talk about Retinoic Acid, which is more powerful and only available on prescription. How to Use Retinol in Your Daily Routine

Using Retinol is easy once you get the hang of it. Here’s a simple guide:

  • Start Slow: If you’re new to Retinol, begin with a lower strength and use it only a few times a week. As your skin gets used to it, you can increase how often you use it.
  • Night time Routine: Put Retinol on at night after you clean your face and follow it up with your usual moisturiser.
  • Use an SPF: Keep your skin hydrated with a good moisturiser, and in the morning, put on sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun. Check out our article on the importance of using Sun Block 7 Things You Absolutely Must Know About Using Sun Protection (SPF)
  • Don’t Mix Too Much: Avoid using Retinol with other strong ingredients, especially acids, to prevent irritation.

Five Reasons to Use Retinol

  1. Smooth Skin: Retinol can make your skin look smoother by reducing wrinkles and age spots.
  2. Elasticity Boost: It helps your skin stay firm and elastic by increasing collagen.
  3. Better Texture: Retinol makes your skin look more even and can even make your pores look smaller.
  4. Fix Sun Damage: It can fade sun damage and spots, giving you a more even skin tone.
  5. Preventive Care: Using Retinol isn’t just about fixing problems – it’s also great for preventing wrinkles and other signs of aging.

Studies have shown that Retinol is very effective for reducing both wrinkles on your neck and at the sides of your eyes. As we mentioned above, the evidence is very much there for the efficacy of Retinol as an anti-aging solution!

Retinol increases cellular turnover

Any Cautions?

While Retinol is fantastic, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Sensitive Skin: If your skin is very sensitive, start slow to avoid redness or irritation.
  • Pregnancy and Breast Feeding: Check with your doctor before using Retinol if you’re pregnant or nursing.
  • Medications: If you’re on certain medications, talk to your dermatologist before adding Retinol to your routine to make sure they play well together.

Conclusion

Retinol is cheap and easy to get so why not use it in your beauty regime. It is backed by data – studies show that it is effective. You do have to be careful with it because it works by increasing cell turnover so, if you use too much, it can be irritating for your skin. Over time the skin gets used to it and you can increase the amount you are using.

You should see results within 12 weeks but we are inclined to think that consistency is the best approach and we would recommend committing to Retinol for an extended period to see best results.

We’ve mentioned that Retinoic Acid, known as Tretinoin or Retin-A, is much more effective but this is only available on prescription and is harder to get. Just so you know, it is available over the counter in Spain – so, if you happen to find yourself there, go into a ‘Farmacia’ and ask for ‘Retinoina’, pronounced ‘Ret-in-oh-EEN-a’. It only costs about €20 a tube there and a tube lasts a long time because you have to use it very sparingly.
